I'm not sure whether to laugh or cry… It's so important that the world wake up to the harm i-Ready extrinsic (external, having nothing to do with the learning task) motivation is doing to kids' learning. Prizes (and lots of them) to make learning "bearable" are turning kids against learning, as they diminish kids' intrinsic desire to try. I am hopeful that our nation's amazing educators are realizing that they are being played by the EdTech industry.
Thanks Richard - agreed it's definitely laugh-or-cry territory. Having worked in digital media for years, I look back on things I did in that professional context which at the time merely seemed like contemporary best practices -- but were really just the herd marching towards a dumbed-down, screen-saturated lunacy. That's my goal with these videos - to hopefully help some educators recognize the forest for the i-Ready trees, and realize the degree to which the e-tail is wagging the dog.
